Affiliate Marketing is a referral-based, revenue-sharing marketing strategy, in which a Merchant pays Affiliates a commission for referring business to his website.

Merchants do not pay for advertising with their Affiliates - they only pay when a sale, lead, download, subscription or other desired action occurs.

An example A webmaster signs up as a new affiliate in a merchants affiliate program. He gets his affiliate login ID and default banner code.

He then logs in to his affiliate administration page, and collects some marketing material for his site (including an article, two banners of varying sizes, rotating banner code, and a web ad). He places the article on his website.

A visitor reads the article, and interested to find out more, clicks through to to the merchant website. The visitor decides to purchase a product and goes through the order form.

The merchant website recognizes that the sale was referred by the affiliate, so it credits the affiliate's account with a commission.
At the end of the month, the affiliate gets a check or a deposit in their account.

This is one of the major methods of home based marketers making money via the Internet.
